Winnie the Pooh Blood and Honey: A Disappointing Disconnected Script

On the stroke of midnight, 31 December 2021, AA Milne’s beloved Winnie-the-Pooh entered the public domain, and with that, a disturbing idea emerged: a horror version of the iconic children’s character. The resulting film, “Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,” appears to have no interest in the actual Winnie-the-Pooh material, and has left many fans of the original story disappointed.

The Premise: Disconnect and Generic

The plot follows a group of young people renting a house in Hundred Acre Wood for a weekend getaway, where they encounter a monstrous and cannibalistic Pooh and Piglet. The film tries to create a disconnect between the cute and beloved characters and the horror elements, but the execution is cack-handed, with a cast of Love Island types seemingly reading their lines off an optician’s chart. The film is a generic derivative horror script with a ramshackle petrol station in the woods and a hillbilly American accent owner. The script could have featured any creepy characters and still be the same story.

Lack of Connection with the Original Material

What’s disappointing is the lack of connection with the original Winnie-the-Pooh material, which had a depth that could have been explored for the horror experience. The stories had elements of potential darkness that could have been amplified in a horror adaptation, but the movie seems to have ignored them. AA Milne’s PTSD after the first world war was a significant factor in his creation of Winnie-the-Pooh, but the film fails to explore this aspect of the story.

Final Thoughts

“Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey” is a wasted opportunity to explore the potential darkness of the original story, and instead, it’s a poorly executed generic horror film. The film’s premise disconnects from the original material and fails to explore the story’s depth, leaving fans of Winnie-the-Pooh disappointed. As a horror movie, it’s not scary, and as a comedy, it’s not funny. The only thing the film does is taint the legacy of the beloved children’s character.
