TAP Air Portugal takes a significant step in expanding its market share on Europe-Brazil routes with the launch of service to Florianópolis, the charming city in southern Brazil. This new route, operated by an Airbus A330-200 aircraft, will connect Lisbon Airport with Florianópolis-Hercílio Luz International Airport three times a week. The addition of Florianópolis as the 13th Brazilian destination for Star Alliance further solidifies its presence in the region.
Henri-Charles Ozarovsky, TAP Group’s Head of Strategy, shared insights with Aviation Week regarding the decision to include Florianópolis in their route network. Ozarovsky mentioned that the airline had been considering this route for years due to the growing demand and the strategic partnerships with Brazilian carriers Azul and GOL. By analyzing regional data, TAP identified Florianópolis as a lucrative market with untapped potential, making the decision to launch flights to the city a deliberate move towards expanding their presence in Brazil.
The introduction of flights to Florianópolis comes after operational challenges at Porto Alegre Airport earlier this year, prompting TAP to reevaluate its route network in Brazil. Despite the setbacks in Porto Alegre, Ozarovsky expressed confidence in the rising demand for flights to Florianópolis and emphasized the importance of adapting to market dynamics to meet customer needs effectively. TAP’s focus on sustainable growth and diversification of routes reflects its commitment to serving the Brazilian market efficiently.
In addition to the new service to Florianópolis, TAP also announced the resumption of flights to Manaus, the vibrant capital of Amazonia, in November. This move is expected to stimulate further development and connectivity in the region, as TAP seeks to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the Brazilian market. With a comprehensive network of destinations in Brazil, including Belem, Fortaleza, Maceio, Natal, and Recife, TAP aims to strengthen its position as a key player in the Europe-Brazil market.
According to data from OAG Schedules Analyser, TAP now offers over 51,000 two-way nonstop weekly tickets and 213,600 monthly seats to Brazil, following the launch of flights to Florianópolis. With a projected market share of 27.9% in September 2024, TAP is positioned as a leading carrier on Europe-Brazil routes, surpassing competitors like LATAM Airlines Group, Air France-KLM Group, Lufthansa Group, ITA Airways, British Airways, and Iberia.
As the Europe-Brazil market continues to expand, driven by increased demand and changing travel patterns, TAP remains vigilant in managing capacity and maintaining a balance between supply and demand. Despite uncertainties surrounding the market’s future outlook, Ozarovsky emphasized TAP’s proactive approach to capacity expansion and market monitoring to ensure sustainable growth and operational excellence.
In conclusion, TAP Air Portugal’s strategic decision to launch flights to Florianópolis underscores its commitment to enhancing connectivity between Europe and Brazil. By leveraging partnerships, analyzing market trends, and adapting to changing dynamics, TAP aims to solidify its position as a key player in the competitive Europe-Brazil market. With a focus on customer satisfaction, sustainable growth, and operational efficiency, TAP is poised to capitalize on emerging opportunities and drive innovation in the airline industry.
